It’s natural for parents to think about higher education for our children, even if it’s a decade away. We all read and hear about the sky rocket costs for college and may get nervous about the future. But did you know there is an easy way to save today for our children’s future higher education expenses?
The Florida Prepaid College Board offers families an opportunity to get ahead of future college expenses with affordable, flexible, tax-free prepaid college and 529 college savings. These plans offer parents and future college attendees peace of mind. The Board, established 27 years ago, manages the Stanley G. Tate Florida Prepaid College Program, the Florida 529 Savings Plan and the Florida Prepaid College Foundation.
In 1987, the Florida Legislature created the Florida Prepaid College Program, founded on the commitment and dedication of Mr. Stanley G. Tate to provide Florida families with an affordable means to save for their children’s future college education. The money you invest into a 529 plan can be used for tuition, fees, books, supplies and even equipment for study at any accredited college, university or vocational school in the United States. You can even use this plan at some foreign universities. From someone who 15 years later is still paying off student loans, this sounds like a wonderful opportunity for me to help ease the burden of college costs for my children.
The first Florida Prepaid College Plans were sold in 1988. The Stanley G. Tate Florida Prepaid College Program is the largest, longest running and most successful prepaid program in the nation. More than 1.6 million Florida Prepaid College Plans have been purchased and more than $6.7 billion has been invested in Prepaid Plans by Florida families. The Florida Prepaid Plan is – and always has been – financially sound. It is also guaranteed by the State of Florida. This is important to me, because who wants to make a risky bet on their child’s future?
I was nicely surprised to learn that nearly 350,000 students have gone to college using Prepaid Plan benefits. Florida 529 Savings Plan has been ranked among the best-performing college savings plans by both Morningstar and SavingforCollege.com.
The Florida 529 Savings Plan can be started at anytime and only requires a $25 initial deposit to open. Even if you can’t save for your child’s entire college education, starting something is always better than doing nothing. The plans offer flexibility and will suit any budget or goals. You control how much you invest and where you invest. You can also change your contribution amounts at any time.
Even though my kids are both under 10, we’ve talked about college. They know that this is going to be a part of their future. However, my husband and I have wondered how we’re going to pay for their college educations. We have nieces and nephews who are currently in college and the cost can be prohibiting. That’s one of the reasons why we were excited to learn about the Florida Prepaid College Program as well as the Florida 529 savings plans. I like that the plans do not limit you to attend only Florida colleges. I know you’ll find this information useful and are probably, like me, planning on taking part in these amazing programs. Time flies, and what better peace of mind then knowing you are doing something today for your child’s future tomorrow. Sign up is easy and you can enroll today on the Florida Prepaid website.
