I thought that was interesting, but never did any research. Over the years, I’d notice that dogs eat grass, at different times. All of my dogs have done it and I noticed they’d sniff around and find the right long grass blade and start gnawing it off and chewing it, like a goat would I suppose. Turns out, mama was on to something. Recently, I noticed my big dog, American bull dog, Maxwell, was eating grass. Thanks to google I decided to finally do a little research and guess what? Dogs do in fact eat grass due to digestive issues and here are a few other reasons.
Your dog could be eating grass because of a digestive issue causing stomach ache, unmet nutritional need (Yes they are smart, aren’t they?) or the one I think fits our reason most is because he needs fiber. Can you believe it, Dang nabbit, my poor dog needs fiber! I’ve noticed he was a bit constipated but never put one and one together. Now that I know, I’ll have to help him remedy that. I found an article that gives you tips on adding fiber to your dogs diet. I’m going to try giving him the apple they suggest, cored of course, and also check the hard food we have been giving him. I believe we switched and that may be the culprit. So now, if you ever see your dog eating grass, you’ll know, there is a reason and perhaps you can help them feel better again. Others believe that dogs just want to eat more, or are using the grass to help them vomit, whatever the reason, there is a reason. Keep that in mind if you see your dog eating grass and see how you can help them.
So funny that you shared this! I know so many people who get mad at their dogs for eating grass because they will eventually throw it up.
And yes, dogs are so smart. We should try taking some of that grass when we feel sick to our stomaches. 😉
